We are committed to a society in which every person, regardless of age, is respected and valued. People at every stage of life should have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to society. Our goal is to challenge negative perceptions and make ageism visible. We aim to highlight the importance of later life for our community.

Our Mission

We work to counter ageism in Switzerland:

  1. We raise awareness of ageism to strengthen public understanding of the issue.
  2. We build a platform and a community where people can share their experiences and express their views.
  3. We conduct innovative research to better understand ageism.
  4. We provide recommendations to policymakers to help prevent ageism.

Welcome to «Jedes Alter zählt» (German for «Every Age counts»)

A project by the UZH Healthy Longevity Center and the UZH Center for Gerontology

Have you ever experienced age discrimination? We all use age to categorise people. This can lead to unfair treatment and disadvantage, and it can undermine solidarity between generations. In such cases, we refer to ageism. Ageism encompasses stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) towards others or ourselves on the basis of age.

Ageism can affect us at any age, but its impact is often strongest as we grow older.

Discover how you can actively contribute to our mission.

1. Raise awareness: Learn more about ageism

Ageism often goes unnoticed: in everyday life, at work, in the healthcare system, or within one’s social circle. It can affect quality of life, health, and even life expectancy. Our e-learning modules (only available in German) feature short videos, practical tips, and points for reflection. Our digital library offers further projects, webinars, and ideas — for reflection and sharing.

2. Share experiences: Help make ageism visible

Describe what you have experienced or observed. Where do you perceive ageism? Or have you experienced positive togetherness between different generations? On our platform, you can share your personal experiences anonymously or publicly.

3. Shape research: Your experience matters

The experiences you share are valuable for our research. Using modern analytical methods, we analyse how ageism is experienced in Switzerland and where action is needed to counter it. Your contributions help us identify patterns and develop concrete recommendations to prevent age discrimination and promote age diversity.

4. Drive change: For a society where every age counts

Real change can only happen when we work together. There are many ways to get involved: share your ideas, take part in projects, or connect with others. Join our community and help shape what comes next.

«Jedes Alter zählt» at the 23rd World Congress of IAGG

July 2026

We have reached an important milestone on the path towards a more age-inclusive society: for the first time, we analysed the experiences of age discrimination and age inclusion shared on our platform.

We presented the preliminary findings at the 23rd World Congress of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), held in Amsterdam from 5 to 9 July 2026. As part of the symposium «Age-Friendly Practices Against Ageism», which we co-organised with international experts, and through a poster presentation showcasing our project, we shared insights into our work.

One of the highlights was the opportunity to exchange ideas with professionals from around the world. The diverse perspectives and inspiring discussions on ageism offered fresh insights and provided valuable inspiration for the next steps of our work.

Partnership Between the Healthy Longevity Center and the Age-Stiftung

June 2026

Thanks to this new partnership, our project is entering a new phase. With funding from Age-Stiftung, we are developing new outreach formats, both digital and in-person. We plan to offer formats such as interactive workshops with community members that create new spaces for intergenerational connection and exchange.

We thank Age-Stiftung for its support and look forward to working together.

«Jedes Alter zählt» in the video series of «Schweiz forscht»

June 2026

Last May, we had the pleasure of welcoming «Schweiz forscht» to our office. In its new video series, «Schweiz forscht» provides visibility for Swiss citizen science projects like ours—projects in which citizens not only participate in research but can also help shape the research process.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the team for filming the video. Special thanks also go to Perdita Baumgartner and Renato Duckeck, who, as volunteers, made an important contribution to this video and spoke about their personal experiences with age discrimination.

Jedes Alter zählt Translated Into Several Languages

Our Plattfrom is now translated into English! This was made possible through a great collaboration with Prof. Dr. Nancy Pachana und her research group at the University of Queensland.

A French translation is also planned for the near future.

«So much for 'Forever Young’: Ageism in the Music Industry».

March 2026

This reality was the subject of lively discussion at this year’s Swiss m4music music festival. We are proud that we, too, were represented at the panel discussion by our project staff member Miriam Wallimann.

Together with artist Fränzi Madörin, musician Lina Wolf, and Wieland Krämer, CEO of Powerline Agency, representatives from academia and industry came together to facilitate an engaging discussion about personal experiences with ageism in the music industry and potential solutions.

Jedes Alter zählt at the National Congress of Ageing

January 2026

On January 22, 2026, we had the privilege of participating in Pro Senectute’s 2nd National Congress on Aging in Biel. We look back on a day filled with many new insights. The opportunity to exchange ideas with a wide range of stakeholders—including the Swiss Association VASOS and Pro Senectute itself—was particularly valuable.

We look forward to many more encounters like this!

New Interview Series in Collaboration with the Community

November 2025

Our new interview series on age discrimination, inclusion, and coexistence has officially launched. The series is being created in collaboration with our community and experts from a wide range of fields, including research, politics, and business.

A short excerpt from the first episode:

At the 20th Zurich Ageing Conference organised by the Zurich Seniors Association (ZSS), we had the opportunity to present our «Every Age Counts» campaign. We engaged in valuable discussions with participants about their personal experiences of age discrimination and age diversity.
Together, we explored how experiences can be shared easily using our platform on a tablet. We would like to thank everyone who took part for their important contribution.

Swiss Diversity Award 2025: Jedes Alter zählt Wins in «Age» Category

September 2025

Just two months after launching the website, our project received the Swiss Diversity Award in the «Age» category. This award recognises our commitment to combating age discrimination and motivates us to continue this work with renewed energy.
